John Prine Was a Friend of Mine

I went with friends to a John Prine tribute night at Conor Byrne Pub in Ballard, WA, on April 8th 2023, where one of the friends’ son, Carl Christensen was one of the acts. There were more than 10 different artists singing John Prine songs or songs about him. It was a lot of fun and they were very talented.

The next day I wrote this song.

My Salad Days

I feel I should explain what my “salad days” means. In Webster’s dictionary it states; “A good salad is fresh, crisp, and usually green. Those attributes are often associated (in both vegetables and people) with vitality and immaturity.” Cleopatra says to her serving woman in Shakespeare’s “Antony and Cleopatra” “My salad days, When I was green in judgement …”

John Prine Was a Friend of Mine
written by: Phil Kane (2023)

John Prine was a friend of mine
But only in my mind
John Prine was a friend of mine

His songs, my friends and I would sing
At every gathering
Back in my salad days

We were living in our own "Paradise"
Listening to John Prine
Back in my salad days

We danced to the Rolling Stones
But we cried for "Sam Stone"
Back in my salad days

We said "Hello in There" to our friends
Ike, Earl, and Lloyd
Back in my salad days

John Prine was a friend of mine
But only in my mind
John Prine was a friend of mine

His songs, my friends and I would sing
At every gathering
Back in my salad days

We were living in our own "Paradise"
Listening to John Prine
Back in my salad days

I never met an "Angel From Montgomery"
But they were all angels to me
Back in my salad days

Many of us had an "Illegal Smile"
And we felt "Pretty Good"
Back in my salad days

John Prine was a friend of mine
But only in my mind
John Prine was a friend of mine
John Prine was a friend of mine

  1. John Prine is one of my favorite artist. Thanks for the song Phil, it resonates with me.
I miss hanging by the campfire making music like we use to. Keep the songs coming!

    1. I’m glad you like the song, you were there. I miss the campfire singing too. I’m thinking about doing another recording of “There’s a Place That I Go” aka “I’m going to the Chumstick Valley” and posting it here.
      Love.

  2. I love the tone of your voice in this song. Angel From Montgomery, one of my favs, guess that’s why we sing it every time we get together & play music, thanks for that.
